The small coral island of Anguilla is the northernmost of the English-speaking Leeward Islands. Its name is derived from the Spanish word for eel due to the island's long, thin shape. This quiet island boasts sandy beaches, coral reefs and warm seas. The lifestyle is laid-back, and since the island is remote, it has only recently seen the development of a few hotels, resorts and guesthouses.
The climate and weather in Anguilla is warm all year, with high humidity, tempered by the cooling northeast trade winds. Mosquitoes can be troublesome. Even though mosquitoes in the Leeward Islands do not carry malaria, they can transmit dengue fever.
The majority of the population are descendants of West African slaves. The remaining population is made up of Europeans (mostly descended from Irish settlers), East Indians (whose ancestors were brought in as indentured laborers after the abolition of slavery) and people of mixed race. English is the official language.
The head of state is the British monarch. The head of government is the chief minister, appointed by the governor, who is appointed by the British monarch. There is a House of Assembly, elected by direct popular vote.
The communications infrastructure in Anguilla is modern, with international direct dialing available. The few roads that exist are in reasonably good condition. Rental cars are available.
Anguilla has few natural resources, and the economy depends heavily on luxury tourism, offshore banking, lobster fishing and remittances from emigrants. Most of the inhabitants engage in subsistence farming.
Anguilla is a quiet, peaceful island with a low crime rate; the incidence of violent crime is particularly low.
