Cayman Islands

With year-round sun, golden beaches, some of the best diving in the world, and the seclusion and tranquility of a desert island, the Cayman Islands offer a variety of experiences, from the busy, commercial Grand Cayman to the secluded and peaceful Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

The climate is warm and tropical throughout the year, moderated by the cooling trade winds. The rainy season, with usually brief showers, is May-October.

The population groups in the islands are: 40 percent mixed Caucasian and African; 20 percent Caucasian; 20 percent African; and 20 percent expatriates of various countries. English is the official language.

Excellent air transportation is available among the islands with numerous flights from Gerrard Smith International Airport and Owen Jones International Airport. Cayman Airways is the national airline but other carriers such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Continental, Delta, US Airways, British Airways, Air Canada, Air Jamaica and Northwestern offer regular service. Public transportation is limited, though bus service is extensive. Taxis, rental cars, motor scooters and bicycles are available on Grand Cayman.

Numerous resorts and hotels are available on the islands. On Grand Cayman, popular hotels along 7 Mile Beach include Courtyard Marriott, Westin Casuarina, Hyatt Regency, Beach Club and Comfort Suites. Elsewhere on Grand Cayman vacationers and business travelers enjoy staying at resorts such as Reef Resort, Morritt's Tortuga and Spanish Bay Reef. On Little Cayman, accommodation options include the Little Cayman Beach Resort and Conch Club while on Cayman Brac the Brac Reef Beach Resort, Brac Caribbean Village and Carib Sands Resort are popular.

Several cruises make port-of-call stops in the Caymans. They include but are not limited to: Holland American Line, Disney, Carnival Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International.

The Cayman Islands are a British Crown Colony, the chief of state being the British monarch. The head of government is the governor and president of the executive council, appointed by the monarch. There is a legislative assembly, elected by popular vote.

The islands are a thriving offshore financial center. Tourism is also a mainstay, and is aimed at the luxury market. The standard of living and prices are among the highest in the world.

The communications infrastructure is modern, with cable and satellite links, IDD to North America and Europe.

The overall crime rate on the Cayman Islands is low, but street crime is a possibility, especially at night.
