Chile

Chile stretches more than half the length of South America, yet is rarely wider than 180 km (112 miles). The topography is incredibly diverse, ranging from desert to alpine glaciers and the fjords of Patagonia. Altitude varies from sea level to 6,000 meters (19,000 feet). Offshore, Chile includes Easter Island and the Juan Fernandez Islands.

The weather is equally diverse, from warm and sunny to snow-capped peaks. The southern end of the country is very close to the South Pole, and therefore cold and wet all year. In the central region, the climate is mild, with a rainy season May-August. The central valley's climate is like that of southern California. Fortunately, most of Chile's 2,000-plus volcanoes are dormant.

Chileans are known for their easy-going attitude and gracious hospitality. More than a third of the population resides in the capital, Santiago. Though most live a European lifestyle, traditional Native American communities are still found in the south. Social class is more important than race. Spanish is the official language.

The international airport in Santiago is a major destination for airlines from around the globe. Flying is the best way to cover the long distances between destinations in Chile, although there are about 80,000 km (50,000 miles) of well-maintained roads, including the Pan American Highway that runs the length of the country. Comfortable long-distance buses serve all major cities, and the inefficient state-owned railway criss-crosses the country.

The communications infrastructure in Chile is modern and reliable, with several carriers offering international service. International direct dialing is available.

Chile's economy is among the strongest in South America, with well developed agriculture, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and service industries. Chile is quite affordable, especially outside the cities.

The government is democratic, with an elected president and a chamber of deputies. Presidents serve a term of six years.

Chile has long been known as a safe travel destination, but crime has been increasing in recent years, particularly in Santiago, and travelers may be affected.
