Costa Rica

Stretching from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, bisected by a series of mountains, Costa Rica is one of the richest and most diverse biological hotspots in the world. The government strongly protects more than 10 percent of this ecologically rich nation from development. Costa Rica is also a very popular destination for American vacationers, school groups and even expatriates. The real estate market in Costa Rica is similar to the US and welcoming to those seeking to buy property, vacation or retirement homes.

Costa Rica weather is influenced by the wide variety of climate zones: Wet and humid on the Caribbean coast, drier and cooler in the mountains, and hot in summer on the Pacific coast. The rainy season takes place May-November; rain is heaviest on the Caribbean coast.

The people are extremely friendly. The population is primarily of mixed European and Native American ancestry, with small percentages of pure Native Americans and blacks. Spanish is the official language though English is spoken by most in the hospitality industry, particularly in the resorts.

Tourists will find that Costa Rica has a wide variety of hotels, resorts and condominiums. Many are near the beaches (playa costa rica) and offer tour packages for those interested in eco-tourism in the national parks or to visit a volcano. Recreational activities include hiking, sailing, surfing, deep sea fishing, scuba-diving, snorkeling and cycling. Visitors will find the most options for recreation and dining in cities such as San Jose, Quepos, Leberia, Limon, Arenal, Monteverde, Tamarindo, Puntarenas, Golfito, Dominical, Drake and San Isidro.

The communications infrastructure is modern, with international direct dialing available. The international airport in San Jose provides a gateway to Central America from around the world. ATMs are available and the major bank is Banco Nacional de Costa Rica. The roads are in poor condition; their condition deteriorates with increasing distance from the cities, and in the rainy season. Drive on the right. The extensive bus service is the most popular way to travel but rental cars are available.

Costa Rica is one of the most stable countries in Central America, and even disbanded its armed forces in 1949. The former military budget was dedicated to education.

The economy is strong, with very efficient manufacturing, service, tourism, banana and coffee industries.

Long considered a safe destination, Costa Rica has seen an increase in the crime rate in recent years. Some property and violent crime is directed at foreigners.
