Djibouti--The Republic of

Located at the mouth of the Red Sea, the region now known as Djibouti gained independence from France in 1977. This small, yet strategic country with a population of less than 500,000 is an important transient point for goods shipping from northeast Africa. It is also a free-trade zone and hosts French and American military bases.

The weather in Djibouti is dry and the country is arid. The lowest point in Africa, Lake Assal, is located in the Djibouti.

Two thirds of the population lives in the urban areas such as Djibouti (the capital city) Obock, Balho, Khor Angar and Tadjoura. French and Arabic are the official languages. English is spoken by a limited number of people.

The country emerged from a civil war in 2001 and currently has a constitutional democracy with laws based on French and Islamic law.

International air service is available from the capital city on carriers such as Djibouti Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways.

Telephone facilities in the city of Djibouti are adequate, as are the microwave radio relay connections to outlying areas of the country. Accommodations for tourists are limited and visitors need to remain alert to crime.
