The Dominican Republic is one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the Caribbean. A land of forested mountains, fertile valleys and pristine beaches, ever since Christopher Columbus declared Hispaniola the most beautiful island on earth, it has struggled with war and suffering. Today, poverty remains a pressing concern.
The weather in the Dominican Republic reflects the fact that the climate is semitropical, moderated by year-round easterly winds. The rainy season is from May-November in the south, December-April in the north.
The Dominican Republic is a representative democracy, led by the president. There is a legislature - the National Congress - elected by popular vote. Since the mid-1990s, the economy has grown vigorously, led by construction, tourism and telecommunications.
International visitors may arrive by air at the international airport in Santo Domingo or by cruise ship. Regular flights are available among major cities and towns, especially popular tourist destinations such as La Romana and Puerto Plata. There is a reasonable road network, though most roads are not paved; drive on the right. Bus travel is inexpensive and shared taxis are available in the cities.
The telecommunications infrastructure is relatively efficient, with an island-wide microwave network, plus both undersea cable and satellite international connections. Full international direct dialing is available.
Petty and violent crimes are rising in the Dominican Republic, and certain areas should be avoided because of the high crime threat.
