Fed. States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia comprises four main islands: Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Yap, and 607 smaller islands and atolls spread over a vast expanse of the western Pacific Ocean. Pohnpei is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia. Each of the four main states maintains its own capital city, airport, customs and immigration service, and offers the traveler a unique culture and outlook. Access to Micronesia is by air through Hawaii, Manila, Guam or Sydney, Australia. Each island has its own dialect, but English is the official and common language of all the islands.

The weather and climate of Micronesia averages 27.5 C (80 F) and light tropical clothing is worn all year. Trade winds arrive from the northeast in December and travelers can enjoy windsurfing and sailing until the winds shift in June. Year-round rainfall is common and occasional typhoon damage can occur during the June to December typhoon season.

A diverse range of natural ecosystems such as pristine coral reefs, lush tropical rain forests, mangrove swamps and unspoiled beaches will delight naturalists. The profusion of tropical flora and fauna welcome indigenous and rare migratory birds, while an abundance of crystal clear diving venues shelter fantastic arrays of underwater life.

Ancient people from Asia and Polynesia settled the islands, later discovered by Spanish explorers. Colonization by Germans after World War I was followed by Japanese occupation until Micronesia was designated by the United Nations after World War II as a Trust Territory under supervision of the United States. Today the Federated States of Micronesia is self-governing.

Air service is available between islands. Extensive boat systems connect most islands at a moderate cost. Major roads are paved and traffic drives on the right side.

Telecommunications are connected through satellite and are reliable. U.S. currency and U.S. postal services are standard on all the islands.

Micronesia is a secure travel destination with a low crime rate, but incidents of verbal and physical abuse are increasing. Travelers should exercise common sense security precautions, avoid confrontations and be alert to petty crime.
