Liberia

Internal fighting subsided throughout Liberia, but political tensions remain. The uncertain domestic security situation has slowed the process of rebuilding the country. This is hugely unfortunate, not only for Liberians but also for visitors. The country has much to offer, including beautiful landscapes, large rainforests and an array of cultures. If the security situation improves sufficiently, rural Liberia could emerge as a desirable tourist destination.

Liberia is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire and the Atlantic Ocean. The geography consists of low coastal plain areas with marshes and tidal lagoons. A forested plateau is further inland, and a mountainous region hugs the Guinea border. The weather in Liberia is usually warm and humid, with a dry season from November to April.

The international airport is near the capital, Monrovia, and is served by Ghana Airlines, Air Guinea and Weasua Air Transport. These regional airlines also provide services to neighboring countries including Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Guinea. There are no direct connections to Europe or the U.S.

Small boats provide local transportation on many rivers and unscheduled coastal steamers occasionally take passengers. Vehicle transportation is limited due to the poor road conditions. Rental or chauffeured cars are available in Monrovia. Bush-taxis are available from Monrovia to Buchanan, Gbarnga and the Sierra Leone border. Some routes are restricted during the rainy season.

International direct dialing is available in some cities. The internal telephone network in Monrovia is gradually extending throughout the country. A few Internet cafes provide services in Monrovia. Letters sent by regular mail to the U.S. or Europe can take up to one month.

The native population consists of at least 15 major tribal groupings. Less then 3 percent of the population is American-Liberian. English is the official language; African languages spoken in Liberia include Kpelle, Kru and Bassa.

The security situation in Liberia remains extremely unstable; violence is a constant threat nationwide. Violent and petty crimes are everyday occurrences, especially in the urban areas. Use extreme caution when traveling in Liberia. Attacks by disgruntled former soldiers and rebels are taking place in rural Liberia. Security is further compromised by the effects of Cote d'Ivoire's civil war, which has driven masses of refugees into eastern Liberia.
