White beaches, emerald lagoons and deep green palm leaves best summarize the Maldives, an archipelago of 1,192 islands spread across the Indian Ocean. Only 202 islands are inhabited, the rest are either uninhabited or are included in the collection of 74 resort islands. None of the islands is larger than eight km (five miles) wide nor more than three meters (9.8 feet) above sea level.
The Maldives is a favorite destination for divers, surfers and sailors. Off the beaten path, the Maldives is treasured by affluent travelers and tourists. The weather is warm year-round. There are two monsoon seasons; the southwest monsoon from May to October brings rain and wind; and the northeast monsoon from November to April when the climate is dry with little wind.
Most major credit cards are accepted in the Maldives but there are no ATMs.
Telecommunications are excellent with international direct dialing. Postal services are reliable but slow; package delivery services are available. Internet access also is available. There are less than six miles of roads in the Maldives; boats and seaplanes are the primary means of transportation.
Crime poses few problems for visitors.
