Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country with topography ranging from subtropical jungle to the world's highest mountain, Mt. Everest. Nepal's mystical Himalayan peaks and vast, isolated valleys draw climbers and trekkers from all over the globe. Wildlife in Nepal includes tigers, leopards, gaur, elephants, buffalo and deer.

Nepal shares borders with Tibet (administered by China) to the north and northwest and India to the west, south and east. Most of the country lies on the southern slope of the Himalayas, extending down to the upper edge of the Ganges Plain. The hilly central area is crossed by the Lower Himalayas.

Nepal's weather and climate ranges from subtropical in the south to cool summers and severe winters in the northern mountains. Monsoons from the Indian Ocean bring heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan region June-September (and heavy snow to the mountains). The remainder of the year is dry.

Nepal's beauty belies the fact that it is one of the world's poorest countries. Its people come from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds, with an intermingling of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. The Dali Lama is in exile in Nepal. English is not widely spoken in Nepal.

Nepal is an inexpensive destination. Most major credit cards are accepted in tourist shops, hotels and restaurants. ATMs are not available. Public telephones are almost nonexistent except in Kathmandu, the capital. The postal service is slow but international package delivery services are available. Internet facilities are available in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Patan and Pokhara.

Travel by road can be hazardous, especially during Maoist anniversary dates in February and April. Domestic flights on a carrier such as Royal Nepal Airlines, Air Nepal International or Yeti Airlines offer the best links to major towns throughout Nepal, although inclement weather can result in delayed or canceled flights.

Crime is steadily increasing and political demonstrations are occurring more frequently and can result in violence. Most Western governments caution against travel to Nepal for the near term because of political turmoil and government instability that resulted from the killing of nine members of Nepal's royal family in June 2001.
