New Caledonia is an archipelago of several Melanesian islands located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country offers sandy white beaches accented by coconut palms, unspoiled rainforests and blue lagoons. It is a diver's paradise, with miles of underwater treasures.
The islands enjoy spring weather year round. December to March is warm and humid with moderate rainfall; April to November is cool and dry with balmy trade winds. Cyclone season is December to March.
The people of New Caledonia are Melanesian, European, Pacific Islander and Indonesian. The main religion is Roman Catholic, with some New Caledonians following Protestant, Muslim and indigenous beliefs. New Caledonians enjoy music and dance that have been developed to relate stories of life and nature. French and Melanesian-Polynesian dialects are spoken throughout the islands. Since 1956, New Caledonia has been an overseas territory of France. The Noumea Accord of 1998 delayed independence for New Caledonia until at least 2013.
International airlines fly into Tontouta International Airport, 28 miles (45 km) northwest of the capital city of Noumea. Vehicles drive on the right side of the roads, which are well maintained and link major towns and large villages. Bus service and car rentals are safe and readily available. Air service is popular for island hopping.
The telephone system is reliable, and international direct dialing is available in hotels and most post offices. Postal and package services are efficient.
Although the crime rate is very low, foreigners should exercise common sense security precautions and take appropriate measures to secure their personal belongings.
