New Zealand

New Zealand well deserves its Maori name: Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud. Clouds cling to the mountains, fiords, rainforests and glaciers of the temperate South Island and cultivate the fern trees, verdant countryside and volcanic lakes of subtropical North Island. Millions of years of isolation have created an environment where ancient and unique plants and animals, especially birds, thrive in New Zealand's compact and exceptionally varied landscape.

New Zealand is an outdoor enthusiast's dream, with long trekking routes, towering mountains, pristine coastline and wonderful weather. The warmest months are December through February; June through August is the coolest time of year. Earthquakes occasionally occur, but seldom cause serious damage. As one of the world's least-densely populated countries, New Zealand is a source of both tranquility in the countryside and sophistication in the cities.

An independent nation and member of the British Commonwealth, New Zealand is a modern country with a diverse population and stable economy and government. The Maoris, New Zealand's original settlers, traveled from Polynesia about 1,000 years ago. Although most Kiwis - as New Zealanders are often called - are of British descent and English is the main language, some still speak Maori. The thermal region of Rotorua on the North Island is the current center of Maori cultural arts and education.

Traffic flows on the left and roads are well maintained. Bus, train and airline services are reliable. Ferry service between islands must be booked in advance. Telecommunications and postal services are modern and reliable. Numerous airlines offer flights to New Zealand. Air New Zealand is the national flag carrier.

New Zealand is a friendly, comfortable and healthy destination. Food and water are safe. Hotel accommodations and dining options are plentiful especially in cities such as Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. The crime rate is low, but travelers should be alert for pickpockets and petty crime. Vehicle theft is on the rise so cars should be locked and possessions secured.
