Singapore

Famous for its upscale shopping options, Singapore also impresses tourists and travelers with architecture and culture. Ultra-modern skyscrapers compliment the traditional Asian edifices of old Chinatown and Little India. Unlike much of Southeast Asia, Singapore is sparkling clean, cleaner than most European and U.S. cities. Singapore also is one of the world's busiest ports.

The country is 136 km (84.5 miles) north of the equator. Expect the weather to be hot and humid year-round. November, December and January receive the most rain.

Mandarin, English, Tamil and Malay are the official languages of Singapore. English serves as the lingua franca and is used for business, academic and legal matters. A number of Chinese dialects including Hokkien are also spoken in Singapore.

Singapore's communications infrastructure is reliable and efficient. International direct dialing and Internet access are common. The postal service is also reliable.

Singapore is one of the more expensive destinations in Southeast Asia. All major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Singapore and ATM services are available through most banks.

The transportation system is efficient and inexpensive. Taxis are readily available and Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit System is one of the most modern in the world. Public buses are available. Because of the government's control over vehicle access to downtown, traffic runs surprisingly smoothly for a major city.

There are 79 airlines operating out of Singapore, with service to and from 43 countries. Popular carriers include Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Air France, JAL and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Strict enforcement of laws makes Singapore one of the safest destinations in Asia.
