Spain

Known for its deep history, rich culture and diverse geography, Spain (Espana) attracts millions of travelers yearly. From bullfights to flamenco dancing, Moorish to futuristic architecture, old world village charm and pulsing cities and beaches, Spain offers an eclectic menu for visitors.

Spain shares the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal and boasts beaches, islands, mountains, plains and forests. The highest capital city in Europe, Madrid sits at 635 meters (2,100 feet). Spain is a country of historic, popular cities. In addition to Madrid, visitors enjoy touring cities such as Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, Toledo, Granada and Seville.

Castilian Spanish is the official language, while Catalonian, Galician and Vasco are spoken in Catalonia, Galicia and the Basque regions. Exceptional artists and artisans in all creative fields - painting, writing, dance, music, sculpture, architecture - have helped Spain influence Western culture for centuries.

Spain established a constitutional monarchy in 1975. In the early years of Spain's democracy, the country was dominated by its socialist party. In 2004, Spain's newly-elected Socialist Party government, led by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero replaced the conservative Popular Party.

The government has made progress in developing ties with other nations and increasing prosperity and economic growth. A major difficulty facing Spain is its relations with the Basque separatist paramilitary organization ETA. However, this situation may improve following the permanent cease-fire declared in March 2006. The country is a member of NATO and entered the European Community in 1986. Most Spaniards are Roman Catholic.

The weather in Spain is influenced by the region. The northern part is considered a maritime climate which means the weather is generally mild in the winter. Summers are warm but not overly hot. There is frequent but not abundant rainfall throughout the year. In the central region the weather is typically dryer with warm, arid summers. Winters can be cool to cold with moderate precipitation. In the Mediterranean region, the weather is generally warmer (both summer and winter) and there is less rainfall throughout the year. Sea breezes and warm temperatures along the Costa del Sol make it a popular destination for vacationers from around Spain and the world.

Overseas visitors usually fly into one of two international airports, in Madrid or Barcelona. Popular airlines with direct flights from the US to Spain include Iberia, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Continental, Air Europa, Spanair and US Airways. Spain has an extensive bus service, along with a railroad network connecting all regions on the Iberian Peninsula. Rental cars are available in all major cities. Popular agencies include AutoEurope, Advantage Spain, Alamo and National. Fees for public transportation are generally inexpensive. Driving is on the right side of the road. Spain has an adequate telecommunications system.

Vacationers and visitors to Spain have numerous hotel options. Accommodations range from inexpensive hostels to 5-star hotels. Camping is also popular in Spain. Tourists have a variety of activities. In the cities, guided tours are popular. Seasonal trips to the mountains or beaches in Spain are popular, but resort towns in Spain can be crowded and expensive during peak season.

Violent crime directed at travelers is rare, but petty theft and simple assault are common in Spain. This is particularly true in the larger cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia, and near resort destinations along the coast. Most thefts occur at night in cities and on trains, where single travelers are selected as victims.
