Sweden

Sweden is one of the most industrially advanced countries in the world and boasts the highest standard of living in Europe. Forests, mountains and countless lakes cover the countryside, and fjords line the jagged coast.

Surprisingly, Sweden has abstained from war for more than a century, helping the country to gain and keep its economic stability. Sweden's pacifism has also protected its infrastructure from the battles that scarred much of Europe and, as a result, nearly 1,000 churches dating to the Middle Ages remain standing.

The weather in Sweden varies drastically depending on location; the northern portion is inside the Arctic Circle, providing 24-hours of daylight in summer and exceedingly cold winters; the southern area, where the majority of farming is done, has a mild climate that can produce very hot summers. More than 80% of the population lives in cities.

Sweden's government is a constitutional monarchy, with its capital Stockholm fondly referred to as, "the Venice of the north," because of its network of waterways. Swedish is the official language, but English is spoken frequently, especially in business.

The transportation system is extensive, with efficient rail, bus and road travel. Driving in Sweden is on the right side of the road. Ferry services are available between Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Traveling to Sweden is expensive, especially when traveling solo as accommodation can be pricey. Many museums and tourist sites, however are free. The telecommunications system is reliable.

Visitors will find a variety of hotel choices from international chains like Four Seasons to smaller, independent establishments. It is recommended you make and confirm reservations. Dining options are varied with many local specialties to choose from. Seafood dishes are popular and delicious.

There are 40 airports in Sweden and 897 flights per week. Popular air carriers in Sweden include SAS, British Airways Continental Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

While the overall crime rate is low in Sweden, travelers should exercise common sense security precautions. Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, purse snatching and the theft of unattended property, are common, especially in tourist areas.
