Tajikistan

Tajikistan is made up of relatively independent regions, separated by high mountains. The mountainous terrain and religious and political differences make for strong regional loyalties rather than to the country as a whole.

Most of the people of Tajikistan live in the western half of the country; industry is concentrated in Leninabad Oblast in the north, joined economically with Uzbekistan. The capital city of Dushanbe is a second industrial region. Rural areas hold most of the population and produce cotton, potatoes, fruit, nuts, honey, livestock and tobacco. The per-capita GDP is the lowest of the former Soviet Republics.

The climate and weather of Tajikistan is continental, with hot summers and mild winters. Climate varies considerably with altitude, approaching polar in the highest elevations of the Pamir mountains.

The population of six million is 65 percent Tajik, 25 percent Uzbek, 3.5 percent Russian. Sunni Muslims make up 80 percent of the population, Shi'a Muslims, 5 percent.

Both the communications infrastructure and road network are out-of-date and poorly maintained. Many towns are not connected to the phone network. Cell phone service is extremely limited.

The main entry to the country is through the international airport in Dushanbe. Taxis may be found at the airport and at the larger hotels in Dushanbe, but are otherwise scarce. While no car rental companies are available in Dushanbe, cars with drivers can be arranged at major hotels.

The government of Tajikistan is a democracy, with a president and prime minister, plus a Supreme Assembly consisting of the Assembly of Representatives and the National Assembly.

Crime can be a problem in Tajikistan. Foreigners are targeted because of their perceived wealth in this poverty-stricken country. Women traveling alone may be assumed to be of low moral standing and thus become targets for sexual harassment.
