Trinidad, just off the northern coast of Venezuela, and its small but lush sister island of Tobago, form the most southerly republic of the Caribbean islands. With friendly people, a fascinating culture, good cuisine and music, forests, white beaches and fine weather, Trinidad and Tobago is a popular travel destination. Locations such as Crown Point, Coco Reef and Pigeon Point offer a wide variety of attractions, hotel accommodations and amenities.
Both islands enjoy the cooling influence of eastern trade winds and virtually guarantee at least some sun every day of the year. The warmest months are June-October; the rainy season runs June-December. Tobago is a bit cooler and considerably drier than Trinidad.
The population is varied, with the largest group being immigrants from northern India, followed by African, mixed, Caucasian and Chinese. English is the official language, although it is spoken in a fast dialect that encompasses Spanish, French and African words.
Trinidad and Tobago is a parliamentary democracy. The head of state is the president, the head of government is the prime minister.
The communications infrastructure is modern, with good local service and excellent international service. International direct dialing is available. Roads are generally in good condition. Gasoline is readily available. Rental vehicles are available on both islands. Buses are frequently overcrowded and not punctual. Taxis are also available.
Trinidad and Tobago has earned a reputation as an excellent investment site for international businesses. Trinidad and Tobago's oil and mining industries, unlike those in other islands in the eastern Caribbean, give it viable industries beyond tourism. Successful economic reforms were implemented in 1995, and foreign investment and trade are strong. Prices in Trinidad and Tobago are generally lower than in most other Caribbean destinations.
Pickpocketing and purse snatching can be a problem, especially during Carnival. Crime is on the rise specifically in population centers such as Port of Spain.
