Vietnam

Vietnam offers both palm-fringed beaches and cool hilltop resorts and has become a popular vacation destination for tourists and travelers from around the world. The tranquil capital of Hanoi in the north stands in contrast to the more bustling Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the south. Vietnam has only been open to tourism the past few years.

In recent years companies from western countries have begun building a presence in Vietnam, reviving a business climate. Increasingly manufacturing facilities are locating in Vietnam and with them there is growing demand within the country for consumer goods and service.

Vietnam shares a border with China in the north and Laos and Cambodia on the West. The country is bounded by the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea to the east and south. Vietnam is a S-shaped peninsula, with thousands of offshore islands and archipelagos.

The climate and weather varies from north to south. Tropical monsoons occur May-October. Temperatures can get very cool in the north during winter months, while the south experiences hot humid weather like neighboring Cambodia and Laos.

The telecommunications system in Vietnam is evolving along with much of the country's infrastructure. International direct dialing is available in the larger cities, but phone service is less reliable in the countryside. Although the postal system is slow and unreliable, international package delivery services are available in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Limited Internet access is available in larger cities.

The transportation system also is evolving. Roads often need repair and may be impassable during the monsoon season. Bus service is poor and overcrowded. Taxis are available; negotiate fares in advance. Trains provide reliable but expensive travel between cities in Vietnam.

Prices for most goods and services range from inexpensive to moderate, though some luxury-class hotels may be as expensive as those in the West. Credit cards are accepted in many shops, hotels and restaurants, but expect to be charged a commission. There is only one ATM in Hanoi and two in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnamese is the official language but English, French and even Russian (mostly in the north) are spoken.

Violent crimes against foreigners are uncommon in Vietnam. Exercise common sense security precautions in large crowds, especially in shopping areas and tourist destinations.
